Stories in Stone: A Heritage Walking Tour of The Porter House
Heritage Days is a global MGallery activation that highlights the unique stories behind each hotel in the collection. It’s your chance to step inside historic buildings, uncover local legends, and experience the past that continues to shape today’s guest journey.
At The Porter House Hotel Sydney – MGallery, our story begins in 1876 when tobacco magnate Sir Hugh Dixson built the property as a thriving leather and tobacco factory. The building’s striking brick façade, ironbark beams, and cast-iron columns still stand strong, bearing witness to Sydney’s transformation from a colonial outpost to a vibrant metropolis.
During the restoration, a number of artefacts were uncovered beneath the site — fragments of leather, tobacco tools, and everyday items once used by the craftsmen who worked here. These pieces reveal hidden layers of the hotel’s industrial past and connect us directly to the people whose work shaped its history. Carefully preserved, they now form part of the living story we share with every guest.
Today, the Porter House blends heritage and luxury, weaving 19th-century details with contemporary design. Every corner holds a story, from preserved architectural features to the unearthed treasures beneath our floors.
Join us on Monday, 29 September at 1:00pm for an exclusive guided walking tour. Discover the history, explore the artefacts, and see how the building’s heritage continues to inspire modern luxury at The Porter House Hotel Sydney – MGallery.
